One of the best stops you can make on your visit to Hay River
is our Visitor Information Centre.
Here you will find a pleasant, helpful and well-informed staff
ready to do everything they can to help make your stay in
the community completely enjoyable.
At the Hay River VIC you can pick up all the latest information
on local events, from what's
happening today in town to what the roads are like, what the
forest fire rating is, where
to stay, where to eat to what the fishing is like at the
best holes. You can watch videos about the town and about
shipping on the "Big River". Browse through collections
of old photos, read up on local
history - or just stand or sit around, have a cup of coffee
and chat with the staff and other visitors. You can also find
plenty of information on lodges
in the area, other communities, the
parks in the region, how to inquire about local conducted
tours.
There's even more in this building: upstairs is a mini-display
area where displays are mounted and changed from time to time
through the season. Ask about the old relics from the Liard
River, and some of the other interesting artifacts and special
items on loan for the summer - the staff will be glad to tell
you all they know.
Also,
keep your eye on the big cork board which is posted with all
sorts of extra information that may just make your holiday
that much more interesting.

The VIC, operated by the Town of Hay River, runs a program
of conducted walking tours at particular times through each
week during the height of the season. These walks go along
the Kiwanis Nature Trails
and provide an opportunity for visitors to learn something
of the natural history of the area. Full details are available
from the staff. Other programs are in the development stage
and some may be added this year.
The
VIC is open daily from 9:00am to 9:00pm during the summer and closed during the winter. You can call us
at (867) 874-3180 or email us at tourism@northwestel.net. You can also contact the Hay River Town Hall for more info.
Washrooms
are available, as is a fresh water supply and a dumping
station. There are picnic tables which you are welcome to
use - and you're just about in the 'downtown core'.
We
hope you enjoy your stay with us.
