During the winter season we have a multitude of recreational activities to keep you busy. We offer cross country skiing at our Nordic centre, sliding and tobogganing at our Chamber of Commerce Park, and many outdoor ice rinks to choose from. Snowmobiling is also a popular recreation in Hay River. With our many trails and creeks, as well as the Hay River and Great Slave Lake to ride on, hours of fun and many sights can be seen. Snow cross races and drag races offer thrills and excitement in our town on an annual basis as well. Our recreation centre offers an ice rink, curling rink and aquatic centre which features; lanes, an indoor waterslide, kiddie pools, hot tub, and sauna. Another place to escape those chilly days is our library, which offers many programs to keep you busy as well as events to entertain the whole family.
In the summer months there are even more options available to you. With our sandy beaches on the fringe of Canada’s second largest lake, and almost endless hours of sunlight, we offer a sun seeker’s paradise. If lazing around isn’t an option, there are many other choices for you; backpacking or canoeing through our many beautiful community and territorial parks, such as Lady Evelyn Falls, Louise Falls, Alexandra Falls, Escarpment Creek or McNally Creek just to name a few in the South Slave Region. Our local 9-hole golf course, bordering the winding Hay River, offers the beauty of nature with the odd glimpse of local wildlife.
I’m sure you will find the people in Hay River our greatest attribute. They are friendly, compassionate and helpful. Many of these people started out like you. They came for a visit, but felt compelled to stay. This says a lot about our close knit community and the people in it. Experiencing Hay River is going to be an unforgettable experience for you that will be etched in your memories forever.
