DERBY RULES & REGULATIONS
SAFETY:
SAFETY
IS OUR PRIME CONCERN AND SHOULD BE YOURS TOO!
- ENTRANTS
MUST BE 18 YEARS OF AGE OR OLDER
- ALL
DRIVERS MUST WEAR APPROVED HELMETS AND SAFETY GLASSES
OR GOGGLES.
- SEAT
BELTS MUST BE WORN (COMPULSORY)
- DRIVER
MUST STAY INSIDE THE VEHICLE DURING EVENTS AND ALSO
KEEP HEAD AND ARMS INSIDE. IF THE DRIVER REACHES FOR
HIS FLAG, HE IS CONSIDERED OUT.
- ALL
CARS WILL BE CHECKED FOR WORKING BRAKES. THEY MUST BE
WORKING AT 100%.
- FIRE
SUITS ARE STRONGLY RECOMMENDED. LONG SLEEVE SHIRTS,
JACKETS, LONG PANTS OR COVERALLS MUST BE WORN.
- NO
HEADSETS OR STOPWATCHES ARE ALLOWED TO ASSIST DRIVERS.

CAR
PREPARATION:
ITEMS
YOU MUST DO
- REMOVE
ALL GLASS, PLASTIC ORNAMENTS, LIGHTS, BULBS, CHROME
SIDE TRIMS, and HUBCAPS. CAR MUST BE CLEAN OF ANY LOOSE
OBJECTS
- REMOVE
ALL UPHOLSTERY EXCEPT FRONT SEAT.
- DRIVER’S
DOOR MUST BE REINFORCED. CEMENT OR STEEL BARS OR A COMBINATION
OF BOTH IS ACCEPTABLE. IF USING CEMENT THE DOOR MUST
BE 2/3 FULL. ALL DOORS MUST BE SECURLEY FASTENED SHUT
WITH BAR CLAMPS OR CHAINS WITH A BOLT. CHANNEL IRON
MAY BE USED, 1 BEAM OR BOX STEEL. (ENDS MUST BE BEVELED
OR ROUNDED WITH MAXIMUM LENGTH 76 INCHES LONG.) BOLTS
HOLDING THE BARS TO CAR MUST GO THROUGH ENTIRE DOOR
OR FENDER, NOT JUST OUTER SKIN. BOLTS MUST NOT EXTRUDE
BEYOND BARS WITHIN REASON. DOOR BAR CAN ONLY EXTEND
A MAXIMUM OF 8 INCHES AHEAD OF FRONT FENDER DOOR SEAM.
PIPE, GRADER BLADES RAILWAY TIES, OR ANGLE IRON IS NOT
ACCEPTABLE. IF THE DOOR BAR FALLS OFF DURING THE DERBY
THE CAR IS DISQUALIFIED. MINIMUM THICKNESS IS 3/16.
- ALL
CARS MUST HAVE HOODS AND MUST BE FASTENED DOWN IN SIX
PLACES. WELDING IS NOT PERMITTED. 1 ¼" REDIROD
OR ALL THREAD IS MAXIMUM SIZE FOR BOLTS. HOOD HOLD DOWN
BOLTS CANNOT BE INSTALLED AHEAD OF THE RAD, OR IN FRONT
OF THE RAD. SEDANS MAY USE FOUR BOLTS TO THE FRAME,
2 ON THE HOOD AND W ON THE TRUNK, STATION WAGONSMAY
ONLY USE TWO REDRODS ON THE HOOD. WHASHER PLATE SIZE
5" x 5" IN EACH PLACE. ALL HOODS MUST HAVE
HOLES ON EACH SIDE OF THE CARB FOR FIRE EXTINGUISHER
ACCESSIBILITY. CAR MUST HAVE SUITABLE AIR CLEANER ON
CARB.
- GAS
TANK MUST BE RELOCATED TO THE BACKSEAT AREA OF THE CAR
AND SECURELY FASTENED. MAXIMUM 5 GALLONS. METAL JERRY
CANS OR BOAT TANKS ARE ALLOWED. A HOLE MUST BE CUT IN
THE FLOOR METAL UNDER WHERE THE TANK IS MOUNTED.
- BATTERY
MUST BE MOUNTED ON THE FLOOR OF THE PASSENGER SIDE OF
CAR. IT MUST BE SECURED AND MUST BE COVERED. MAX. TWO
BATTERIES PER CAR.
- RADIATOR
MUST REMAIN IN STOCK POSITION.
- NO
WHITE CARS ARE ALLOWED. BODY OF CAR MUST BE IN A COLOR
OTHER THAN WHITE. THE DRIVERS SIDE DOOR MUST BE PAINTED
WHITE AND ONLY THE DRIVERS SIDE DOOR CAN BE PAINTED
WHITE.
- ELECTRIC
SWITCHES MUST BE UNIFORMED. UP OR FORWARD FOR ON, DOWN
OR BACK FOR OFF.
OPTIONAL
MODIFICATIONS:
- WHEELWELLS
AND BUMPERS MAY BE TRIMMED
- MOTOR
AND TRANSMISSION MOUNTS MAY BE STRENGTHENED BY USE OF
CHAIN AND REAR END MAY BE LOCKED.
- BUMPERS
MAY BE WELDED TO STOCK FRAME AND TO STOCK BRACKET. YOU
MAY ALSO WELD THE SHOCKS ON THE BUMPER.CHAINED BUMPERS
ARE PREMITTED. NO CHANNEL IRON ALLOWED.
- CROSS
BRACE SHOULD BE USED IN FRONT AND BEHIND THE SEAT THAT
IS CONNECTED TO THE DOOR BARS. THE PASSENGER DOOR IS OPTIONAL.
CROSS BARS MUST BE WITHIN REASONABLE SIZE (2"-6").
THE REAR CROSSBAR MAY BE MOUNTED FROM THE BAR TO THE FLOOR,
BUT NOT THE FRAME.
- A
METAL HEADREST SHOULD BE INSTALLED. EITHER DOOR POST
TO DOOR POST, OR FLOOR TO ROOF TYPES ARE ACCEPTABLE.
HEADREST MUST BE BOLTED, NOT WELDED TO FLOOR OR ROOF.
HEADREST BRACKET CAN BE WELDED OR BOLTED TO THE TOP
OF THE CROSS-BRACE. POST TO POST TYPES MUST BE BELOW
TOP OF THE FRONT SEAT AND HEADREST PAD MUST BE FLAT,
PADDED AND HAVE A MINUMUM OF 6-8 INCHES.

- 2. A
TRANSMISSION COOLER IS PREMITTED BUT CANNOT BE COUNTED ON
THE OUTSIDE OF THE CAR. CAN BE UNDER HOOD OR INSIDE OF CAR.
IF UNDER HOOD, PUT IN FRONT OR BEHIND RAD, OR INSTALL ON
FIREWALL. IF INSIDE CAR PUT ON FIREWALL UNDER DASH OR ON
FRONT OF THE PASSENGER SIDE. THE FLOOR OR FIREWALL CAN BE
CUT TO PERMIT COOLER TO FUNCTION. FLOOR MUST HAVE A SLASH
OR CUT OUT TO ALLOW ANY FLUID TO DRAIN IF LEAK DEVELOPS.
- TRANSMISSION
DIPSTICKS SHOULD HAVE 3" LONG PIECE OF ¾"
HOSE, FITTED TIGHTLY OVER THE END OF IT TO PREVENT FLUID
OVERFLOW INTO THE EXHAUST. THIS HOSE MUST BE MOUNTED
AWAY FROM THE EXHAUST SYSTEM.
- FIREWALLS
CAN BE HAMMERED BACK OR CUT AWAY TO ALLOW DISTRIBUTOR
CLEARANCE.
- ANY
TYPE OF FUEL PUMPS ARE PERMITTED. BUCKET SEATS AND FLOOR
SHIFTER ARE PERMITTED.
- DRIVE
SHAFTS MAY BE WELDED. ON SEDANS, REAR COIL SPRINGS MAY
BE TACKED IN. TRAILING ARMS MAY BE SHORTENED.
MODIFICATION
NO NOS:
- NO
TRAILER HITCHES ARE PERMITTED, REMOVE ITS FRAME AND
ALL COMPONENTS. ALSO NO REINFORCED WHEELS, RAD, BASE
ETC. THERE IS ABSOLUTELY NO WELDING TO THE FRAME, WITH
THE EXCEPTION OF THE BUMPER BRACKETS. NO SEAM WELDING
OF FLOOR PANELS. ABSOLUTELY NO REFORCEMENT OF THE BODY
OR FRAME IS PERMITTED.
- NO
WATER COOLANT SYSTEMS ALLOWED IN THE CAR, LEAVE STOCK
OR TAKE OUT.
- ENGINE
AND TRANSMISSION MUST REMAIN IN STOCK POSITION.
- NO
TIRES ALLOWED BEYOND 8 PLY. THEY MUST BE D.O.T. APPROVED.
NO INDUSTRIAL OR FORKLIFT TIRES ALLOWED. PASSENGER TIRES
ONLY. STUDDED TIRES ARE PROHIBITED. ONLY INNER TUBE
IN TIRES. NO RUGS OR ADDITIVES ALLOWED. YOU CANNOT USE
ANY FUEL OTHER THAN UPMP GAS. NO AVIATION FUEL OR ADDITIVES.
- REVERSE
OR EXTENDED SPRING SHACKLES NOT ALLOWED IF RAISES HEIGHT
OF THE CAR. NO CHAINS FROM REAR END TO THE FRAME.
- EXHAUST:
DO NOT REMOVE HEAD PIPES. MUFFLER AND TAILPIPE MAY BE
CUT OFF. HEADERS THROUGH THE HOOD AE ACCEPTED.
- WHEN
REPAIRING DAMAGED CARS, YOU MAY NO LONGER US ANY WELDING
ON THE FRAME.
- YOU
ANNOT PREBOLT OR WELD SUSPENSION AND/OR BALL JOINTS
OR TIE ROD ENDS. STEERING UNIVERSAL MAY NOT BE STRENGTHENED.
THERE WILL BE NO LOWERING OF CENTRE LINK OR IDLER ARM.
MUST USE STOCK STEERING COLUMNS.
DERBY
COMPETITION RULES:
- ANY
ONE UNDER THE INFLUENCE OF DRUGS OR ALCOHOL WILL NOT
BE PERMITTED TO RACE.
- CARS
MUST BE DERBY READY
- INTENTIONAL
HIT ON DRIVER’S DOOR WILL RESULT IN AUTOMATIC DISQUALIFICATION
(JUDGES DECISION)
- WHEN
A VEHICLE BECOMES DISABLED OR TIMED OUT, YOU MUST BREAK
OFF YOUR MARKER FLAG AND REMAIN IN YOUR VEHICLE UNTIL
HEAT IS COMPLETED.
- ONCE
MARKER FLAG HAS BEEN BROKEN OFF A CAR IT BECOMES UNTOUCHABLE.
INTENTIONAL HITTING ON AN UNTOUCHABLE VEHICLE WILL RESULT
IN DISQUALIFICATION.(JUDGES DECISION)
- A
WHITE FLAG WILL INDICATE THE STAR, AND A RED FLAG WILL
INDICATE AN EMERGENCY. ALL VEHICLES MUST STOP AND OR
LEAVE THE TRACK AS DIRECTED BY ONE OF THE JUDGES OR
OFFICIALS.
- THERE
IS A 90 SECOND RULE IN PLACE. DRIVERS MUST START YOUR
STALLED CAR AND MAKE A HIT WITHIN THIS TIME FRAME OR
YOU WILL BE DISQUALIFIED.
- LAST
AGGRESSIVE HIT WILL WIN THE HEAT. (JUDGES DECISION)
- ALL
VEHICLES MUST BE INSPECTED FOR SAFETY PRIOR TO THE START
OF THE DERBY. ABSOLUTELY NO AFTER FACTORY REINFORCEMENT
IS PERMITTED. ALL CARS WINNING THEIR HEAT WILL BE TAKEN
ASIDE IMMEDIATELY AFTE THE GEAT AND PICKED UP AND INSPECTED
FOR ANY REINFORCING. IF ANY IS FOUND THE CAR WILL BE
DISQUALIFIED AND THE SECOND PLACE WILL THEN MOVE TO
THE FINAL HEAT. INSPECTION JUDGES DECISION WILL BE FINAL.
