MAYOR: Jean-Marc Miltenberger

Mayor Miltenberger was born April 15, 1963 in Yellowknife, NT. He has lived in Rae for 6 years, Fort Smith for 12 years, Fort Simpson for 13 years and currently in Hay River for 14 years.

Mayor Miltenberger has been married to Leah Ilene for 20 years, with two children, Jacqueline Ilene and Cole Matthew.

He is an avid golfer, hockey player and involved with any other sporting activity. He is a Minor Hockey Coach (Intermediate Level 2, 8 years), and Goaltender Coach and Evaluator.

Jean-Marc is a Journeyman Plumber, Gasfitter and Oil Burner Mechanic, 4th year Millwright. President and Owner with his wife Leah Miltenberger of Midnight Mechanical Limited o/a Midnight Petroleum. Petroleum Logistics Management Company, est. 1989.
Mayor Miltenberger served 1 year on Fort Simpson Village council, 4.5 years as Village of Fort Simpson Public Works Superintendent and is currently Mayor of the Town of Hay River elect as of April 07, 2008.
Mayor Miltenberger served on Disaster Assistance Committee for the GNWT in 1986 and Corrections Service of Canada – Special Review Committee, 2004.

DEPUTY MAYOR: Mike Maher

Deputy Mayor Michael Maher was born in the Inuvik and has lived in Hay River since 1973.  Mike is employed at Territorial Quick Print Inc. as Xerox Account Manager.  This is Mike’s third term on Council.  Mike is the Chairman of the Southwest Territorial Business Development Centre.

COUNCILLOR: Pat Burnstad

Councillor Burnstad is serving her first term as Town Councillor.  She has been a resident of Hay River since 1978, has taught Business Education, was vice-principal and ended her career as Guidance Counselor at Diamond Jenness High School.  She has retired after 33 years of teaching in various NWT communities, Alberta and West Africa.  She was a strong member of the NWT Teachers’ Association occupying executive positions at the Regional and Central level.  In Hay River she has sat on the Family Support Centre Board and is currently chairperson of Growing Together.  Councillor Burnstad holds an executive position on both the Lions Club and the Northern Lights Arts and Crafts Guild.  She also owns her own retail business in Hay River.

COUNCILLOR: Diana Ehman

We moved with our family to Hay River in 1990 and decided to stay and make Hay River our home.  We raised our 5 children here and now enjoy our three grandchildren. 

Councillor Ehman is an active member of many volunteer organizations including the Hay River Lions Club, as a member of the Volunteer Fire and Ambulance Department and as an official of the NWT Track and Field Championships. Diana has served two terms on council, one as mayor.  Diana has worked for education and owned a successful small business. Councillor Ehman is currently employed as a physician recruiter for the local health authority. The position offers her the opportunity to meet many different people and to showcase our community. 

Diana enjoys an active lifestyle including swimming, snowshoeing, hiking and canoeing; The willingness to get involved and the sense of commitment to community are an important aspect of life in Hay River.  Councillor Ehman and her husband love the life style and natural beauty of the area but it is the people that keep us here.

Councillor: Ken Latour

Councillor Ken Latour’s family moved to Hay River down from Tuktoyaktuk in the early 70’s and it has been home ever since.  Ken attended high school as a boarder in Winnipeg and then went on to complete a Bachelor of Arts degree in Anthropology from Princeton University. 

Since graduating, Ken worked in Hay River for the NWT Power Corporation before going overseas to teach English at an Indonesian University for two years where he learned to speak Indonesian and developed a fondness for motorcycles and mangos. 

Upon returning to Canada Ken went to Ft. Resolution, taking up a post as the community adult educator for Aurora College, and spent five rewarding years in that community.  In 2002, he returned to Hay River where, with his partner, he became a first-time homeowner a year later. 

In the last five years before joining Council, Councillor Latour has worked as an adult educator, as a consultant in the education field, has served two years on the Hay River District Education Authority, and has been a small business owner.  He is looking forward to the challenges of serving on Council and the opportunity to give back to his community.

COUNCILLOR: Sandra Lester

Councillor Lester is a business person.  She arrived in Hay River in 1962 and has three adult children:  Suzanne, Theresa and Ginger and five grandkids.

COUNCILLOR: Vince McKay

Councillor McKay is serving his second term as Town Councillor.  Councillor McKay was born and raised in Hay River.  He works for the Department of Justice as a Correctional Officer at the South Mackenzie Correctional Centre and is a volunteer fire fighter with the Hay River Fire Department.

COUNCILLOR: Dawna O'Brien

Councillor O’Brien is serving her first term as Town Councillor. She has been a resident and Homeowner in Hay River since 1995. Dawna has sat on the Board of Directors for the Soaring Eagle Friendship Centre for a number of years and recently served two terms as President of the Board. She is a 20 year employee of the GNWT, currently working as a Career Services Officer with the Department of Education. Prior to moving to Hay River she worked for the Legislative Assembly of the NWT as Members’ Services Officer for six years.

COUNCILLOR: Kevin Wallington

Councillor Wallington has 12 years of experience in the north and is a new arrival to Council.  Kevin is currently the Coordinator at the Hay River Community Youth Centre.  COUNCILLOR Wallington has extensive experience in the field of youth work and is a trained communicator.
