Jane Groenewegen
MLA, Hay River South




Jane Mary (Ostler) Groenewegen was born in Exeter, Ontario on November 8th, 1956. Following completion of high school in St. Marys, Ontario, Mrs. Groenewegen left home for Hay River. She met a wide cross-section of people in Hay River while working at the Northern Transportation Co. Ltd., the Department of Fisheries and Oceans, and filling casual positions at the H.H. Williams Memorial Hospital and the Hay River RCMP Detachment. In 1978 she became a self-employed businessperson.

A resident of Hay River since 1974, Mrs. Groenewegen has been active in community affairs. She has served on Hay River's Town Council, Youth Justice Committee, Tourism Advisory Board and Community Education Council. In addition, she served a three-year term on the Board of Directors of the Northwest Territories Power Corporation. Her community service also includes several years as President of the Hay River and NWT Chambers of Commerce.

Mrs. Groenewegen was elected to the Legislative Assembly on October 16th, 1995. After four productive years, she was returned to the 14th Assembly by acclamation on December 6th, 1999. Mrs. Groenewegen served for approximately two years in the Cabinet as the Minister of Health and Social Services, Deputy Premier, Minister Responsible for Seniors, Persons with Disabilities and the Status of Women.

Mrs. Groenewegen was elected to a third term in the Legislative Assembly on November 24th, 2003. Besides her responsibilities to represent the constituents of Hay River South as a regular member, she was elected to serve as Deputy Speaker.

Mrs. Groenewegen and her husband Richard have three children, sons, Jordan and his wife Kathleen (Marsh) Groenewegen, Jeffrey and his wife Kandace (Shaw) Groenewegen and one daughter Jillian.

Paul Delorey was first elected to the 14th Legislative Assembly as the Member for Hay River North on December 6th, 1999. Mr. Delorey was then acclaimed to the 15th Legislative Assembly for a second term of office on October 31, 2003, and on June 1, 2004 Mr. Delorey was elected as Speaker of the 15th Legislative Assembly.

During his tenure in the 14th Legislative Assembly, Mr. Delorey was a Member of the following Standing Committees: Governance and Economic Development, Rules and Procedures, Accountability and Oversight and served as the Deputy Chair of the Committee of the Whole. In addition, he was a member of the Special Committee on the Implementation of Self-Government and the Sunset Clause.

Prior to his first term of office, Mr. Delorey worked as a locomotive engineer for Raillink Canada. Born in Guysborough, N.S., as the second youngest child in a family of 13, he moved to Hay River in 1968. Two years later, he began work for the Canadian National Railway as a trainperson before advancing to a locomotive engineer.

Mr. Delorey has an extensive history of volunteering and community service. He currently serves as the District Deputy for the Knights of Columbus for the Northwest Territories. He has a total of 20 years of service to the Knights of Columbus organization in the North. He was the local representative for the United Transportation Union for 10 years and sat on the Hay River Recreation Board for two years.

An avid curler, Mr. Delorey has represented the NWT/Yukon at the Canadian Mixed Curling Championships in 1987 and represented Canada in the Strathcona Cup Championships in Scotland in 1998. He has coached junior curling for 22 years and is a fully qualified Level 2 coach. He also served as a Director on the NWT Curling Association Board for three years and as the President of the Hay River Curling Club for five years. Mr. Delorey is presently a member of the Governor General's Curling Club of Canada.

Mr. Delorey and his wife Davida have four children, Michelle, Monique, D'arcy, and Katrina. They are also the proud grandparents to four grandchildren.

Michael McLeod was elected on December 6th, 1999 as the Member for the Deh Cho in the 14th Legislative Assembly of the Northwest Territories, and continues to be an MLA for the 15th Legislative Assembly.

Born in Fort Providence on September 6th, 1959, Mr. McLeod served as the Mayor of the Deh Cho hamlet prior to his election. He is the former President of Métis Local no. 57 in Fort Providence.

Prior to being chosen to sit as the Member for the Deh Cho, Mr. McLeod worked as the band manager for the Fort Providence Dene Band Council and also as an Economic Development Officer for the Government of the Northwest Territories. He also spent several years as a private contractor in Fort Providence.

Mr. McLeod has a diploma in Management Studies from Arctic College and is an active community volunteer including: volunteering for the Mackenzie Daze Celebration, active volunteer for New Years Eve First Night celebration that promotes sobriety, Chair of the Special Joint Committee on Non-Tax Based Community Affairs, and Special Committee on the Review of the Official Languages Act.

He is an honorary lifetime member of the local Friendship Centre. Mr. McLeod is also a founding member of a number of other organizations, Digaa Enterprises Limited a local economic development corporation, founding member of the Deh Cho Regional Council which is known as the Deh Cho First Nation Tribal Council, and a founding member of the Fort Providence Resource Management Board.

Mr. McLeod and his wife Joyce have one son Kevin and two daughters, Robyn and Shawna.
